Well, that corn looks almost good enough to challenge the bear......maybe not. I had to cut down an old white oak next to the steps the bear came up to reach the deck. A friend who visits frequently (see pic) whose totem is the bear, suggested that I have a wood carver carve it into the shape of a bear standing on its hind legs to as a symbolic protector, much like a temple guardian, to welcome visitors. After this visit I'm more convinced than ever of the wisdom of her suggestion. [image]

Camping in Kings Canyon by the river, later in the evening, getting sloshed drinking wine...watching the fire flicker and the 2 young inexperienced campers try to light their fire.....I watched. The guy was determined and had a nice little fire going and went over the to bear box, opened it up, pulled out whatever and shoved the ice chest back into the box but FAILED to close the box...just walking over to the fire...turned his back. Deep into my wine I watched as the campground erupted and a bear came strolling up like nobody's business....sat on his haunched in front of the ice chest, proceeded to pull out the chest, open it...sift through what was in their, settled on what we learned later was a package of chicken...had the manners to close the ice chest...and meandered off downstream like he was strolling in the park..which he sorta was. While this was happening the girl was screaming, neighbors where banging pots and pans and the dude was so frightened he ended up face down in the dirt after running and tripping over a tree root. All the while...in my slightly inebriated stated..I watched the whole thing. I can recall the whole episode clear as day nearly 25 years later. You rare forget a bear encounter.... PS. THAT IS SO COOLLLLLL......how was the corn? A bit of paprika and butter? The corn was to die for. (Well, not literally ). Just butter and lightly charred at the edges. [image]

if I had been dining on the deck, that wouldn't have been a joke. The door back into the cabin would have been between me and the bear (see pic). I would have had to move toward the bear, carrying my precious grilled corn, to get indoors. The alternative was a ten-foot drop to the ground. With a rotator cuff that still isn't ready for Olympic events, I wouldn't have liked my chances. lol [image]

Woodchucks are pretty cool too. My most frequent visitor was the chipmunk until the kids decided they had to discourage the mice by hiring an exterminator. So much for living with nature. They're faithful patrons of the organic food store tho. The goldfinches and hummingbirds are my most constant companions now. Their feeders contain the bear's favorite snacks.
