So while I work on something more meaningful...... something for your amusement.

I did a lot of work in IT...some of it early, some not. But of the stories I can tell, a few for all.

First time I got taken into a "modern" mainframe room the guy doing the tour stops & points out an alarm & light.... says he..."if you hear a loud alarm & that light starts flashing, it is a fire alarm....get out through this entrance as fast as you can. After 45 seconds the door seals & a halon vapour is dispensed in the room. If you don't get out there is no second chance...everything in the room including the fire won't be able to breathe". Welcome to the big league kid. For some reason after that I made sure to never work near a mainframe!

Some years ago I met, while in gov't training, a guy who we will call Lyle..... Felt he knew everything about computers & wasn't shy about letting everyone know. Several years later a co-worker said he had heard about Lyle ...... apperantly he was invited to reconsider his employment options.... It appear he felt the operating system on the mini computers we were using (not a desktop pic) wasn't working to his satisfaction so he started rewriting the operating system... & then changed it on that computer... which of course caused everything to crash, guaranteed his boss couldn't get into the system & caused the manufacturer to get involved.... Somedays knowing it all just isn't a healthy thing.

Lastly we had a sales guy tell us a story from there side. Another sales guy selling for a very big major company sifted through material, picked what he wanted for a client....then started to sell them on a big hard drive array (multiple linked hard drives offering huge storage). Now big clients want reliability & 24 hr uptime & are prepared to pay huge bucks... so the sales guy takes the client to another customer (read another huge important client), who had several of these in service in there main computer room. He had obtained permission to show the equipment....brings the client in..... & demos how one of the array trays of hard drives can be slid out of the equipment tower..... proceeds to chat away & then without missing a beat...... did the following..... Advised the new client how the systems were fault tollerant....which meant it could be interrupted at any time without causing a problem.

(Insert dramatic music here). He then, to make his point pulled out one of the hard drives (yep while it was on & powered up) to make his point.... which immediately crashed all of the array & caused massive problems everywhere else. He apperantly hadn't read all the way through as to what 'fault tollerant' really was.

Needless to say they were hustled out if the room & by the time he made it back to his office he was fired by several layers of mgt.....with the president of the company that allowed the demo still on the phone yelling.

Sadly all true stories.... so if you have an IT worker in your family....be kind as you never know what stupid thing they had to try & repair today...
